Chronic Hospitalization alleviating illness or making us "financially" ill?

India, it's becoming "capital of chronic diseases " and it's alarming and we as the country are little prepared to take care of increasing elderly population with less or no income coupled with a little health insurance coverage. As we are crippling with communicable diseases aggravated by the ill public health system, inadequate sanitation, lack of safe drinking water and inaccessible primary healthcare, accessibility is not physically it is also because of nonavailability of health-related information in colloquial. Now, peoples health is at great risk and people are struggling to have quality life irrespective of age. There are some good stories too, as more people are getting into private multinational companies and most of the companies have invested on health insurance of its employees and their parents hence managing chronic disease become less burdensome on such people. However, it's not the same with the middle class and lower middle class, they are either selling their land or borrowing from local lender to bear the expense of chronic hospitalization. Moreover, tertiary care hospitals have become money hungry institutions as they have invested more in branding and building rather in core infrastructure. Then, coupled with inadequate professional regulation and shortage skilled labor yielded in sub-quality or substandard care in spite of spending hugely out of pocket. It would be great if state governments would take the situation as an emergency and put it on top on their priority list. Solutions are available but they are put aside because of collective arrogance, ignorance, and corruption of medical fraternity. There are a lot of people have developed disruptive technologies to overcome managing complex health information and then to derive clinically meaningful data. Wearable technology to collect data and monitor remotely. At present home hospitalization is not a far-fetched dream, it's quite possible! To do so we need collaboration and willingness of hospitals. I strongly suggest hospitals consider home hospitalization or home health care as a need rather as elective and privilege or economically healthy. Hospitals managers, please come out of their comfort zone, just don't be a money making a machine, be people's caretaker. I would urge hospitals to collaborate with the home healthcare industry to ensure following, 1. Continuity of care beyond hospitalization 2. Decrease or length of stay in a hospital Basalingappagouda Patil
