Letter to Indian Nursing Council, Delhi

Honorable Secretary,

We think the phasing out the GNM is not the solution to elevate the standards of nursing practice, with ample evidence to support the argument.

We hear two arguments in this regard,

1. Phasing out GNM - will enable single entry
2. Higher Education in nursing will enhance the quality of care.

Prima-facia it appears to be fulfilling above listed two pints. However, to care 1.3 Billion people we need more nurses as per current infrastructure which seems impossible.
Hence, we would recommend reconsidering this decision and look for the legislation to enact "Nursing Practice Law".

The nursing Practice Law must clarify the following aspects:
1. Career Path clearly Defined: Connecting the qualifications: ANM - GNM - PBBc/BSc - MSc - Ph.D.,
2. Competencies: Entry-Level Competencies for each of Nursing Qualification
3. Regulation of Practice: Enable the state councils to govern the nursing practice as well the curriculum/Education
4. Nursing Care Delivery structure: Proposing the Skills mix model to deliver comprehensive healthcare services.
5. Public Grievances system - to address the public concerns related to Nursing Practice.
As the healthcare technology is advancing be it mobile health, telemedicine, Nurses shall be equipped with such technology to do so we shall have healthcare technology as a subject in the Nursing Curriculum.

Moreover, as our economy is improving our disposable income have risen and lead to lifestyle changes, the same needs to incorporated into the curriculum. The state councils have to be empowered to update the curriculum in respective states every five years.
